Activated Carbon

OLC 12×30 is a coconut activated carbon for the removal of dissolved organic contaminants from water, wastewater and process liquids. These contaminants include taste and odor compounds, organic color, total organic carbon (TOC) and industrial chemicals such as chlorinated solvents (TCE, PCE). The pore structure enables it to be used for adsorption of both high and low molecule weight impurities from waters and liquids. This carbon is especially effective for adsorbing trace organic compounds such as vinyl chloride, methylene chloride, MTBE and THM’s/disinfection by-products. OLC 12×30 is certified to NSF/ANSI 61 standard.

Activated carbon doesn’t absorb substances like a sponge; it utilizes a process called adsorption. Here, unwanted molecules from liquids or gases get attracted to the vast surface area of the carbon and cling to the pore walls. This trapping ability allows it to remove contaminants like:

  • Chlorine and chlorination byproducts from water
  • Volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that cause unpleasant odors
  • Heavy metals and other toxins

Applications Galore: Versatility shines across numerous industries. Here are just a few examples:

  • Water Purification: Municipal water treatment facilities often use activated carbon filters to remove impurities and improve taste and odor.
  • Air Quality Control: Industrial facilities and even home air purifiers can utilize activated carbon filters to trap pollutants and allergens.
  • Food and Beverage: Helps clarify beverages like juices and wines by removing unwanted colors and flavors.
  • Medicine: In some cases, doctors might prescribe activated carbon to help absorb ingested toxins in the digestive system.

Important Considerations: Activated carbon is a powerful tool, but it’s not a magic bullet. Different types are suited for specific applications. Additionally, its effectiveness can diminish as the pores become filled with captured molecules. So, depending on the use case, replacement or regeneration might be necessary.

It’s remarkable pore structure and adsorption capabilities make it a valuable asset in various purification and filtration processes. From keeping our water clean to improving air quality, activated carbon plays a hidden but crucial role in our everyday lives.
