First, warmer wastewater temperatures accelerate microbial activity in your treatment system — equalization tanks, dissolved air flotation (DAF) units, aerobic biological treatment. That can help treatment efficiency, but only if aeration capacity and hydraulic residence time are sufficient to handle the increased biological oxygen demand.
Second, warmer weather often increases facility water use: more cooling, more washdown, more process water. More flow through your treatment system means less residence time per gallon, pushing partially treated effluent through faster than the biology can process it.
Higher organic load, reduced effective treatment time, and a system sized for average conditions rather than peak summer loading — that combination is what drives the exceedance.
